Page vs. Post
By default, WordPress allows you to create pages and posts to display your content. In general, pages are used for static content that isn’t updated often, while posts are categorized, dynamic content like recipes, blog posts, and news articles.
Pages
- Used for static content (structure doesn’t change frequently)
- Home, about, contact, etc
- Shows in search results
Posts
- Used for dynamic content
- Recipes, blog posts, news articles, etc.
- Shows in search results
- Can be categorized and tagged
Another Way to Organize Content
The CALS Web Services team has created another way to organize and display resources, such as learning resources, documents, projects, and more on your page. If you think this applies to you, read more about our resource directory plugin and contact us to get it set up on your site.
Gutenberg Block Editor
The Gutenberg Block Editor is the default WordPress editor, and is built into the CALS v4 Gutenberg Block theme. Our older CALS 2015 theme that some of our sites still use does not use this editor. If you are still using our CALS 2015 theme, we encourage you to contact us to migrate your website into our CALS v4 Block theme to unlock this new, easy editing experience. Otherwise, if you need help with your CALS 2015 theme site, help docs are archived here.

We recommend the following on-demand video courses on WordPress from LinkedIn Learning. They are free to access with your UW NetID by logging in here: https://lnkd.in/eFrnwki. Not everything in these videos will be exactly like it is in our CALS WordPress version, but the overall concepts and topics are all very relevant and helpful regarding managing and navigating your WordPress admin area and editing page content with the WordPress Gutenberg Block Editor.
